Hello guys!
This is a post relating to modelling.
I have done some modelling before but never gone pro or approached an agency etc. BUT i highly recommend getting into this industry.
The pro's are that you can make up too / around a thousand pounds per shoot for some clients. That's more money for a day/ few hpurs than what most people make in a month.
Ofcourse you have to have certain requirements.
Around 6ft 1 for catwalk is the average requirement but don't let that put you off, there are shorter models out there. But there are print editorials too to make money from. You also have to have a fresh or unique look so be interested in and be slim but healthy.
An agency may call you in for polaroids to shoot all of your angles if they see potential.
A models career can be a lengthy one if you work it right.
If you feel you have model potential and meet the agencies requirements. Take a full length body shot and 2 headshots, one from the front and one from the profile (side) Then just fill out the application and send.
Of course they prefer you to go to open castings or to pop in and see them!
You may be lucky to get spotted too, but becareful as some can be scammers! Alot of spotting happens at music festivals! and i know agents like to head out to oxford street and hit some of the shops like Topman etc. But yea, if its ever wandered your mind and you feel that it might be for you just go for it and have fun!
It can be stressful but im sure it will be worth it.
If you don't feel ready to be agency signed you could try doing some test shoots or TFP ( Time For Print) and some call them where you and the photographer use both of your time to shoot and gain photographs for each others portfolios. Doing test shoots will make you more confident. A well know website to use is Model Mayhem where alot of people who want to be in the industry and wish to grow and develop go.
(disclaimer: becareful as there are some dodgy characters on there!) but at the same time there are really successful people on there. Registering is easy and you can set up your own casting call and ask photographers, stylists etc to work with you on a TFP shoot around your area or another if you're willing to travel and you can tell them what kind of shoot you are after and they can develop that idea as long as everyone is willing to participate etc!
The more shoots you set-up the more confident you will become but make sure you push yourself in the right direction. Research Fashion Editorials for etc at 'The Fashionisto' which is a great Mens Fashion Resource to be inspired by. Look at styling, look at expressions and body language and learn.
Then you can apply to an agency when you feel ready!
I remember my first shoot, i was a wreck, i hadn't had time to get a haircut and i looked so scruffy but the photographer who now is the editor of highly successful Fiasco Magazine was so lovely and welcoming and we had a lot of fun. He pushed me out of my comfort zone which i am really thankful for as i still think back to that day 4 years ago and it really reminds me and helps me to come out of my shell.
It was daunting but really worth it and the images came out great considering it was my first ever shoot!
but i wont forget the experience and ive come along way since.
There are lovely people and there are not so lovely but you can make a judgement based on there more personal social sites like twitters etc even start chatting to them there and what not.
theres always a risk but im sure you know right from wrong.
My newest shoot pushed me but was LOTS of fun. I shot with STUDIO GRABDOWN who are 2 creatives Poppy French and James Barnett! They are original, innovative and lovely people and i was so comfortable doing this shoot!
The styling was natural but quirky inspired by NYLON, these are just a couple of teasers. But i went there not knowing these people only their work and went in not knowing what to expect at all! and the results were amazing. I'll update you when it's released.
If you see other pictures of me, they are generally taken by me as i dabble in photography too but lack a nice camera and models to shoot!
and in this industry it helps to have such great friends because im sure there will be opportunities to work with them again or they may recommend you! This industry is great for meeting new and interesting people and all my experiences so far have been positive.
As long as you don't get dragged in to the darkside due to stress or to be 'cool' you'll be fine!
if you pursue it professionally try through agencys like Models1, Storm, Premier, Oxygen, Nevs, M&P, AMCK, D1, ELITE etc these are all leading agencies!
Good luck and i'd love to hear about any feedback you've had as a model and what your experiences have been!
cya soon and say cheese ;)
